Dear friends and colleagues,

The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development in Israel is concerned with health and human development over the entire life span. In an effort to expand our scope and improve our impact, we have decided to establish a biennial international congress to enable the dissemination of best practice and service delivery. This will be accomplished by gathering professionals from all over the world to share their experience and expertise, to present their research, knowledge and clinical practice and exchange ideas, develop fresh insight and meet colleagues and friends. We expect these regular events to generate the interest and excitement needed to allow our visions to come to fruition.

The many advances in the treatment of serious and life-threatening diseases of childhood and youth have saved millions of lives and made life easier for many more. Most of the resources allocated to the children and youth of all countries go to such treatments. Although this approach is indeed needed and is lifesaving in the biological sense, there is so much more that needs to be done to optimize the conditions necessary for all children to achieve the best opportunities for them in order to live a full life. Obviously, no child is just born poor, destitute or socially dysfunctional. Millions of children worldwide are born into such conditions, but they are without fault or cause. No one area of endeavor that is not addressed is more costly to societies than the losing of productive future workers and contributors due to a negative social spiral. The future of health care for our children and youth should be enfranchising the disenfranchised.

It is my pleasure and privilege to invite you to take part in this first International Congress by submitting abstracts, to become an active partner in a challenging endeavor and contribute to its success.

The conference will be held in the capital of Israel, Jerusalem, a city that fascinates people of all religions and nationalities with its more than 3,000 years of history.
